Boom…….. Ding!  That’s the sound we all love to hear down range when prepping for a hunt or simply plate popping for fun.  The 28 Nosler is a newer caliber, but it’s comparable to some of the well-established titans of the shooting world like the 7mm.

            The .28 Nosler was released in 2014 and its name comes from the first two digits of the caliber, .284”, of the projectile.  This caliber sits somewhere between the 7mm Remington Magnum and the 7mm RUM (Remington Ultra Magnum) powerhouse.  Think of the .28 Nosler as a hybrid of sorts of these two tried and true rounds.

            The .28 Nosler fits in a standard action the same as a .30-06, .270, 7mm Rem. Mag and so on with an output closer to a 7mm RUM without the heavier super mag action.  Weight becomes a big factor when trying to get a rifle that is more comfortable to carry, easier to shoulder, or when a backcountry trip has you counting ounces.

            So how does it shoot?  Well this round will get to your target before quick gets ready.  A factory 175gr AccuBond bullet screams out of the muzzle at over 3100 fps with 3,806 ft. -lbs of energy.  The lighter 160gr AccuBond bullet jumps to over 3300 fps with 3,883 ft.-lbs. of energy.  So basically, you’re going to get 7mm RUM performance out of a standard action with less powder and recoil.  In regard to recoil the general consensus is that the recoil is a little more than a 7mm Rem Mag and that a muzzle break remedies that for even the recoil sensitive.

            This is a flat shooting caliber.  One quick search online and there is no shortage of people shooting this rifle out past 1200 yards consistently.  Nosler’s ballistic chart with a four hundred yard zero has less than a 12” from zero change out to the five hundred yard mark, which will more than cover the shots this guy will take in the field.

            One thing to consider when purchasing this caliber is that there isn’t as wide of a selection of ammo as the more well-established rounds.  The cost of factory ammo is still high so if you shoot a lot you might consider reloading.  Early adopters of this caliber have loved it and the performance they are getting out of it and the more nervous consumers are warming up to the idea of it.  This round will take down just about any game that most of us will pursue so if you’re looking for one rifle to carry on any big game hunt it is worth your attention.
