You will be joining the crew of Glacier Guides Inc., with Master Guide Jimmie Rosenbruch as they guide their clients to Alaskas coastal brown and black bears. This video was produced during both the spring and fall seasons, allowing us to see the different locations that are targeted and the reasons for those locations. These are all spot and stalk hunts using high-powered rifles. During the spring, bears can be found in the estuaries and tidal flats searching for fresh green grass, small crabs in the shoreline rocks and receptive sows. This time of year the boars are really covering ground feeding and looking for love. When a bear is spotted, time is not always on your side and calls for a quick game plan. Fall finds the bears feeding on salmon in the streams as well as some black bears up in the high alpines, filling up on abundant berries.
Judging bears can be very difficult and at times must be done quickly. The overall length of the bear in relation to the size of its head and mass of its chest along with the condition of the hide help to make a determination as to the quality of the bear and whether or not a closer look is desired. Stalking proves to be very exciting at times, as the wind does not always cooperate. The sensitive nose of the bear can smell danger, sending them heading into the thick vegetation.
When it comes to the shooting part of the game, Jimmie has a minimum .375 caliber requirement and recommends high quality optics due to the low light condition that the bears are often spotted and shot during. The accommodations aboard the main boat are top notch with all the modern amenities. The 18ยด skiffs are used to work the back bays and estuaries searching the tidal flats. One great bonus to a hunt like this is the fresh salmon, halibut, crabs and shrimp that are available.
There are seven black bears and three brown bears harvested during this 75 minute video. The quality is very good with a unique piece of video added that shows a 12 hour time-lapse capturing the high and low tide as well as the broad array of weather that can take place. This video will show you what to expect on a spot and stalk boat hunt and get you excited about booking a bear hunt in Alaska. We give this video 3 paws out of 4.
