Monday was the first day of Maine’s bear-hunting season with dogs and a Maine bear hunter is recovering today from non-life threatening injuries he received during an attack by a 300-pound bear he was hunting with hounds.

The man had already fired his weapon at the bear after it charged past the dogs, mortally wounding it but not before it had time to turn towards him. The 37-year-old hunter was out with three friends and dogs when he was bitten in the arm and leg in the unincorporated area of Penobscot County in northern Maine.
