New York state police received a report of a dog being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 90, but what they found was a dead black bear cub.
State Police Capt. Michael P. Nigrelli said a state trooper investigating the report found a nearly 100-pound bear cub on the Niagara Thruway.
"He gets there and determines that the animal is actually a black bear cub that had been struck (and killed) by a vehicle," Nigrelli said.
The body of the 1-year-old bear was initially moved to the side of the interstate before it could be removed entirely by maintenance workers.
This is the second time in two weeks that a black bear has been struck and killed in Erie County.
