The California Department of Fish and Game has announced that the black bear hunting season has closed statewide, verifying that 1,700 bears have been bagged by hunters.

Hunters must submit bears to Fish and Game for validation. Teeth are extracted from half of these bears to help determine the age and health of the states black bear population.

All outstanding bear tags must be returned to the department's Wildlife Branch, 812 9th Street, Sacramento, CA 95811 no later than Feb. 1, 2009.
