The Alaska Board of Game passed a rule forbidding hunters from using land vehicles while hunting black bears on Prince of Wales Island.
The regulation, which will take effect next September (2009), applies to resident and non-resident hunters, according to Boyd Porter, the Ketchikan area game management biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Porter stated that over 90-percent of the hunters that harvest black bears during that time of the fall are non-residents. The regulation will not affect bear hunters' access by aircraft or boat.
They believe the regulation will reduce the bear harvest during September, especially the number of female bears killed.
