Wildlife agents have captured a Louisiana black bear that had been spotted several times over the past week along the Vermilion River in Lafayette.

The young male bear was captured by one of three traps that agents had set earlier in the day.

State Department of Wildlife and Fisheries bear specialist Maria Davidson said she spotted the bear just before dusk in woods along the Vermilion River and monitored the animal with night vision equipment.

Davidson said the black bear, a threatened species in Louisiana, was malnourished and had probably wandered up from the coast along the Vermilion River in search of food.
