Fall Brown Bear Hunt Cancelled For Kenai Peninsula

Because there were too many human-caused brown bear killings between January 1st and September 10th, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has closed the fall portion of the 2008/2009 fall permit hunts on the Kenai Peninsula.

An emergency order was issued that closes the fall hunt for permit holders. However, Fish and Game stated that people who received a fall permit will be allowed to hunt during the spring portion of these hunts within Game Management Units 7 and 15.

Fish and Game says it manages the Kenai Peninsula so human-caused mortalities of brown bears don't exceed 20 total brown bears. There have been 32 brown bears killed from January 1st until September 10th on the Kenai Peninsula. So, for this reason the hunt has been closed.
