For several years, customers of the High Elevations Restaurant in Kidder Township came to the establishment not only for the food, but for "Teddy."

Teddy, as he was called by locals, was a nearly 600-pound black bear that made almost daily visits to the restaurant's Dumpster. The bear was never a problem, said restaurant employee Lisa Fisher, and patrons would often call to ask what time he would be making an appearance.

"He was so calm and big. People would sit in the parking lot or watch him from the windows of the restaurant," Fisher said. "He would eat out of the Dumpster, but he never caused a problem."

On Wednesday afternoon, the bear made its final visit to the Dumpster when it was found dead nearby.
