Mississippi Finds Largest Bear On Record

Mississippi officials released a statement this week that they documented the largest black bear ever found in the state after it was captured last week in Issaquena County by state wildlife officials. The 10-year-old, 432-pound bear was captured and sedated on private land in Issaquena County in the Valley Park area.

The bear weighed 432 pounds. State wildlife officials have captured a couple that were above 400, but this bear has been the largest yet. Once officials changed the batteries in the GPS collar on the bear, they left him to wake up and go about his business.

The Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks estimates there are between 120 and 140 black bears in Mississippi compared to an estimated 3,000 in Louisiana.
