Montana Spring Bear Season Opens April 15th

The Montana spring black bear hunting season starts in one month, on April 15th. Hunters may purchase their hunting license online at fwp.mt.gov, at Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks license providers, or print a paper license application and mail it in to the FWP. Licenses issued through the mail may take two weeks to process so it is best to do that now.

Spring black bear hunters should purchase their licenses by April 14th. Licenses purchased after April 14 may not be used until five days after purchase. Hunters in Montana are limited to one black bear license a year.
All hunters are reminded that they must successfully complete Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ bear identification test before purchasing their license. To take the bear identification test, go to fwp.mt.gov and click on "Bear Identification Test" under "Education" then "Hunter Education." Complete the training and test, and then present the printed online certificate to purchase a license. The training and test can also be obtained on paper, with a mail-in answer card, at FWP regional offices.

The 2012 black-bear regulations are available online on the FWP website, at FWP region offices and license providers.
